REACHING PEACE FOR YOUTH AND CITIES
Ten Points on
GUN SAFETY

• Warn all children never to touch a gun, and to tell an adult immediately whenever a child sees a gun.

• Handle every gun with the assumption that it is loaded.

• Guns, knives and other weapons have no place in schools and other public settings, and must be maintained in full compliance with federal regulations.

• Students or teachers who encounter guns, knives or other weapons must report the incident immediately to authorities, both school and administrators and the police.

• Guns, if kept by adults at home, should be stored under lock and key, and well out of the sight and access of minors and others.

• Anyone accosted by a robber armed with a gun and demanding a purse, wallet or cash, should comply instantly with those demands and avoid resistance.

• Guns are present in 40% to 50% of American homes.

• According to the New England Journal of Medicine, the presence of a gun in the home triples the risk of homicide in that home: the risk of suicide is increased fivefold.

• In the United States, 14 children age 19 and under are killed every day in gun homicides, suicides, and unintentional shootings. For every child killed by a gun, four others are wounded.

• Suicide is more likely to be successful if the victim uses a gun than any other method.
The Youth Handgun Safety Act Notice posted by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms notes:

“1. The misuse of handguns is a leading contribution to juvenile violence and fatalities.

“2. Safely storing and securing firearms away from children will help the unlawful possession of handguns by juveniles, stop accidents, and save lives.

“3. Federal law prohibits, except in certain limited circumstances, anyone under 18 year of age from knowingly possessing a handgun, or any person from selling, delivering, or otherwise transferring a handgun to a person under 18.

“4. A knowing violation of the prohibition against selling delivering, or otherwise transferring a handgun to a person under the age of 18 is, under certain circumstances, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.”
