Ten Points
on
SEXUAL ASSAULT
• Rape is a crime motivated by a need
to control, humiliate and harm. A rapist is not interested in sexual
pleasure, but in hurting or dominating another person.
• Dating violence affects about one in
ten teen couples.
• More than 60% of male rapists are
married. Almost all male rapists had normal sexual relationships at the time
of the assault for which they were convicted.
• Most rapes are committed by a person
known to the victim.
• No one ever asks to be raped. The
rapist chooses victims who seem vulnerable.
•Any sex without consent is rape. No
one can be compelled to have sex, even by a spouse. Marital rape
is a crime.
• A large percentage of “date rapes”
involve alcohol or drug use by the victim and the perpetrator.
• Drinking or drug use are not causes
of rape: they are tools used by rapists.
• “Date rape” drugs, such as GHB, pass
completely out of a woman’s system within 12 hours, making its presence
difficult to prove unless medical tests are performed within that time.
• Sexual harassment is defined as
unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or
physical conduct of a sexual nature, especially when the harasser is a
person with authority over the victim, either in a business or academic
environment.

“There is no difference
between being raped and going head first through a windshield except that
afterward you are afraid not of cars but half the human race.”
