‘Nonviolence is the greatest force at the
disposal of mankind. it is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction
devised by the ingenuity of man.”
—Mohandas K. Gandhi
‘Gandhi was inevitable. If humanity is to progress, Gandhi is inescapable.
He lived, thought and acted, inspired by the vision of humanity evolving
toward a world of peace and harmony. We may ignore Gandhi at our own risk.”
—Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
‘If you keep compassion alive in you while listening, then anger and
irritation cannot arise. Otherwise the things he says, the things she says
will touch off your irritation, anger and suffering. Compassion alone can
protect you from becoming irritated, angry or full of despair.”

Reaching out with
Hands in Healing
“Non-violence,” Mahatma Gandhi declared, “is the greatest
force at the disposal of mankind.” As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said of
his great mentor: “We may ignore Gandhi at our own risk.”
We may wonder how it was that Gandhi and Dr. King
accomplished all they did. Each had courage, each had strength, each died in
the course of seeking justice. But each also had in each day only 24 hours
and two hands.
Two hands. We people with two hands tend to take them
for granted, don’t we? Just ask anyone who has lost a hand in an injury or
to a birth defect. Just now, look down at your hands or at the hands of
someone near you. Your hands, their hands, can become—with prayer and simple
acts of courage—hands in healing.
But how? Notice that our hands were created to have
five fingers each, a total of ten essential digits. Start now by counting to
five, and think of five simple things you can do in the interest of
preventing violence in our world. In this way, you’re lending a hand in
stopping violence. Perhaps this booklet can be of help to you in planning
your course of action. Each section of this booklet contains ten points of
information—one fact for each finger. May these resources assist you as
together we act against violence by joining our hands in healing.
